    Butternut Farm Bed and Breakfast
    1654 Main St., Glastonbury, CT 06033. Phone: (860) 633-7197.

Butternut Farm was built by Jonathan Hale, beginning in 1720. Innkeeper Don Reid acquired the house in 1959 and began painstakingly restoring the interior of this classic colonial home to its original condition by exposing the original wide brick fireplaces, uncovering the broad floorboards and removing later paint from the wealth of paneling on many of the rooms’ walls. Hand-hammered hinges and other hardware, eight paneled fireplaces, handsome summer beams, and cornice detailing are but a few of the many fine features. Visitors come simply to see the extraordinary collection of eighteenth-century Connecticut antiques. Cherry six board chests, candlestands, ball-foot “hired-man” beds, pencilpost cherry beds, gateleg tables, candlesticks, early eighteenth-century banister-back chairs, pewter, and a fine collection of English Delft are but a sampling. Herb and flower gardens abound, along with a herd of prize dairy goats and Mr. Reid’s flocks of chickens, pigeons, ducks, pheasants, and geese. The spacious grounds are beautifully landscaped in an estate-like setting. Resident Abyssinian cats preside over the interior. Rooms: 5

    The Quid Bed and Breakfast
245 Second Hill Rd., New Milford, CT 06776. Phone: (860) 354-6143.

The house was built with wood from an old tobacco barn that was torn down and then used for the interior of the living room. Today we call it recycling–in 1928 it was called using what was available and inexpensive! How times have changed. The property has been in my family for 80 years, consequently The Quid enjoys wonderful privacy and truly pristine surrounding woodlands and grounds. Originally built as a summer home, it has been winterized, added onto and expanded in typical New England fashion. The Quid affords lovely views and interesting landscaping, with many stone walls, terraces and seasonal flower beds. In May and early June the wildflowers are a wonder–there are even yellow lady slippers. I’m very proud of those. Guests are invited to wander and explore, or sit on the deck and bird watch. Thanks to diligent filling of feeders, guests might see anything from the common chickadee to a red-bellied woodpecker, rose-breasted grosbeak, hummingbirds, or even my resident red-tailed hawk. Have a glass of wine, or homemade mint iced tea while viewing these avian visitors. Can you tell that Nature is a big part of life here at The Quid?
